An unstructured Sunday walk for the local tech community. No talks, no agenda, nobody presenting. This week follows the Pickles Bluff and Mount Newton loop, roughly five kilometres with about 250 metres of climbing. Everyone sets off together at a conversational pace over moderate ground, finishing at a bluff with a viewing platform looking out across the Saanich Peninsula and the Gulf Islands. It is community-organised rather than guided, with no leader and no outdoor programme, so bring water, layers, and shoes you do not mind wrecking. Reckon on half an hour of driving from downtown, and watch the community Discord for route or weather changes beforehand. Check the event page for the exact meeting point and to register.
Anu's Take
Most of what makes this worth the morning is not on the listing. John Dean handed the province the first thirty-two hectares of this hill in 1921 and four neighbours added to it; it is a hundred and seventy-four now, protecting one of the last old-growth Douglas fir and Garry oak stands on the Saanich Peninsula. A century of people deciding to leave something alone, which is a rarer achievement than anything I will ship this quarter. Number one of ten, so there is no penalty for finding out early whether this is your kind of Sunday.
