Organizer(s): UBC Master of Educational Technology
Featuring: Cory Doctorow
Cory Doctorow is a science-fiction author, journalist, activist and Big Tech critic, and the writer behind Enshittification. He joins the UBC Master of Educational Technology Speaker Series for a conversation about AI and power. He draws on his new book, The Reverse Centaur's Guide to Life After AI. The questions are what AI actually is, whose interests it serves and where it belongs in people's lives. The organizers frame it for anyone working in education. What happens when AI is built into the systems behind teaching, learning and creative work? How do you resist both the hype and the fatalism, and which choices are still open?
Who's in the room: Educators, instructional designers, MET students and alumni, and longtime Doctorow readers curious where he lands on AI.
Anu's Take
Once you've read Cory Doctorow, you start seeing Enshittification everywhere. In September, The Awkward Teenage Phase of AI Advertising covered advertisers losing visibility and control on Meta's ad platforms, and it read like stage three almost to the letter. If AI is turning up in your work or your classroom, hear him out on it. Can't wait to dig into this, but still wish I could have made the in-person in Vancouver, and still want to get a signed copy of this new book to go on the shelf beside my signed copy of Enshittification.

A client once texted me late at night that AI summaries had made Google worse than Wikipedia, and where I search instead is my answer to that kind of slide.
