Dual-use means building one product that a commercial market and a government will both buy. The government half works differently: buyers there judge the company at least as hard as they judge the product. They look at procurement rules, security and governance standards, staff clearances and how a supply chain is run. The hour is the practical route in rather than the policy behind it, and the organisers' own ARC Lab, a subsidised six-month readiness programme, gets a look as part of it.
Anu's Take
Worth an hour if the defence market is anywhere on next year's list, and the reason is Karl Swannie. He built Echosec here, selling open-source intelligence to national security and public safety buyers, and Flashpoint bought it in 2022, so the room holds someone who finished the route rather than only people mapping it. There is a quiet joke in the structure too: the readiness programme being previewed is subsidised by PacifiCan, so Ottawa is funding the lessons on how to sell to Ottawa.
