Organizer(s): University of Victoria
Featuring: Brian Christian
Brian Christian gives this year's Lipson Lecture, the UVic Faculty of Science's annual public talk, drawing on his bestselling book The Alignment Problem. The book asks how to get AI systems to act on human values when nobody can quite see how they reach an answer. The talk takes on who decides which values go in, and whose political, religious and cultural views end up defining right and wrong. Christian also wrote The Most Human Human and co-wrote Algorithms to Live By.
Who's in the room: UVic students and faculty alongside the wider Victoria public, a mix of people who build AI and people who simply use it.
Anu's Take
If you've read The Alignment Problem, this is a chance to hear Brian Christian work through it in person. I use AI every day, and I still believe it's no substitute for professional judgment. Who decides what these systems should value is a question for all of us, so bring yours.
