Moto Reloaded, a motorcycle apparel store, is exploring how technology could support a secondary market for protective gear through reuse and upcycling. The Gear Recognition Challenge asks for an app that helps decide, from a rider's photo, whether to make an offer. Work in a team of one to four, or come alone and join one on the day. Teams get the gear itself, a photo dataset, expert input and the scoring rubric, and food runs through the day. Bring a laptop and a smartphone, plus whichever AI tools you like to work with. Each team gives a five-minute demo, with $1,000, $500 and $100 for the top three. Entrants must be 18 or older and sign a participant agreement before building, and they keep ownership of their work. Coming from the Lower Mainland without a car? Ask the organizers ahead of time about a ferry pickup. Hacking starts an hour after doors open.
Who's in the room: Developers and designers, along with riders who know protective gear well enough to judge a used jacket.
Anu's Take
If you like building with a problem in hand, this is your Saturday. Adding technology to a traditional business has a lot of moving parts, so I'd start the way this challenge does, with one process, proven before it grows. I'm helping run it through TURN. Bring your curiosity. Thirty years in, it's still the best tool I own. Come spend the day building with me.

Starting with how the process should work, before anyone picks a tool, is the first step I wrote about in my piece on RPA and traditional automation.
