A morning behind the scenes at Level Ground Coffee Roasters, roasting fair trade coffee on Vancouver Island since 1997. It asks what it takes to turn a coffee bean into a business with purpose. The tour walks the roastery floor from green bean to roast. In the presentation room after, the talk covers how the coffee trade works, buying directly from small-scale farmers, and what sustainability looks like in practice. It ends with a side-by-side tasting of two coffees. Level Ground is a food-safe, scent-free facility, so please skip perfume and cologne. Plan to arrive by 9:20. The roastery is about a 25-minute drive from UVic, and carpool details go to registered guests. RSVP is required, and spots are limited.

Who's in the room: UVic students and anyone else curious about entrepreneurship, social impact or supply chains, or who just loves good coffee.

Anu's Take

What a cool behind-the-scenes tour. Anyone who knows me, knows I'm a serious coffee fan. Brings back memories of when Salt Spring Coffee got started in 1996 in downtown Ganges, right beside me and at the exact same time as I was bringing the internet to the Gulf Islands. All of downtown was blanketed in the smell of roasted beans. Coffee, Internet, Innovation is my triangle.
