It was the second event in a three-part series: an October 2025 session captured the industry lens on cost drivers, this January session focused on the government lens, and a March 2026 solutions lab will connect validated barriers to solution providers. An earlier convening surfaced four themes: regulatory fragmentation across municipalities, permitting opacity with 12 to 18 month timelines, data silos, and design iteration waste, which industry estimates add 15 to 25% to project costs. Under Chatham House rules, two panels with federal, provincial, and municipal representation discussed building systems and innovation, and data, codes, and process. The session aimed to produce a validated list of priority barriers, identify pilot-ready municipalities, and build a cross-sector partnership network.</image:caption><image:title>Housing Affordability: Government Alignment</image:title></image:image>

Production databases hold sensitive data that cannot be handed directly to a large language model, so the talk proposed an intermediary masking layer that sits between the LLM and the database and configures access control dynamically at query time. The model requests a specific subset of data and provides a reason for needing it, and that request is then evaluated, filtered, and fulfilled so the model receives what it needs without exposing what it should not see. Oram brings over 15 years of experience building secure backend systems, and his work at VeilStream centres on data sanitization for developer environments.</image:caption><image:title>VIATEC AI Meetup: Technology Track - Give AI Safe Access to Your Production Database</image:title></image:image>

The event was GitHub-centric but fully tool-agnostic, welcoming users of VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, Claude Code, or any other stack. The agenda featured lightning talks, live demos from local engineers, and a community social, with speakers including Ve Sharma, a Microsoft Solution Engineer presenting on the agentic SDLC, and Jeremy Moseley, a Principal Software Engineer at Microsoft, on how five engineers ship 200 pull requests a week. Food and drinks were provided by Microsoft and GitHub, with the space hosted by PwC.</image:caption><image:title>GitHub Copilot Dev Days - Victoria #1</image:title></image:image>

The talk covered the payroll implications of employees working in different provinces, how bookkeepers can help employers stay compliant and accurate without straying into HR or legal advice, and how to market payroll expertise to attract clients from anywhere in Canada. It was presented by Bianca Mueller, an award-winning Certified Professional Bookkeeper and Payroll Compliance Professional with 17 years of experience and Community Manager at Wagepoint, and closed with a Wagepoint demo.</image:caption><image:title>Payroll Without Borders: Remote, Hybrid & Multi-Province Employer</image:title></image:image>

The premise is that where using a computer once meant learning its language of menus, buttons, and shortcuts, Cowork inverts that by having the computer learn your language, read your files, connect to your tools, and take actions on your behalf. The day covered the fundamentals of working with Claude, including tokens, context, system prompts, prompt engineering, and managing cost, before moving from chat to agents and the Cowork mental model of an AI agent running on your own machine with access to your files, calendar, and email. Guided sessions walked through the building blocks of automation: connectors, skills, plugins, and scheduled tasks. Participants left with Cowork connected to their real tools, a custom workflow they built and tested, and an automated task scheduled to run. It was led by Gabriel Velazquez Lopez and Anu Jolliffe.</image:caption><image:title>Learn to Work with an AI Agent - Claude Cowork Workshop</image:title></image:image>

Discussion spans how to ensure quality, correctness, reliability, and maintainability in a world where teams rarely write or even read code, how oversight and engineering principles must evolve, and which long-held practices to abandon or keep. Whether accidental or intentional, choices like truncated axes, improper area encoding, and dual-axis layouts can completely warp an audience's conclusions. The session digs into the science and psychology behind these distortions, building from Tufte's foundational Lie Factor through recent empirical findings from the CHI and IEEE VIS research communities.
